However, drums present certain challenges. For instance, completely emptying them of liquid or viscous products can be difficult, even with gravity-assisted dispensers, leading to product waste and increased costs. Their cylindrical shape also results in inefficient use of storage and transportation space. Additionally, thorough cleaning of drums, often necessary for health or safety reasons, requires additional labor, materials, and time.
The advent of IBC totes, featuring rigid cages, addressed the space inefficiency issue associated with drums. However, this innovation introduced new challenges. The need for two different materials - one for the container and another for the cage - increases manufacturing costs, potentially offsetting the economic benefits of the shape change.
Like drums, IBC totes also present a cleaning challenge. In fact, their design may make them even more difficult to clean than drums.
In Conclusion: While both drum closures and IBC totes have their pros and cons, it’s clear that bulk container systems are currently the optimal choice for transportation, storage, and distribution.
